Bhutan Festival Tours
Witness the Tshechu — a living cultural treasure of colour, faith and motion.
Festival & Fares
The Tshechu — Faith in Motion
Hear the drone of monastic horns echo through a mountain valley; see a whirlwind of brilliant silk and fierce painted masks; feel the energy of a community connected by centuries of tradition.
One of the most visually striking aspects of this notable kingdom is the ancient "Tshechu," a religious living cultural treasure that celebrates Bhutan's age-old traditions. Held during different months of the year, many of our hand-picked festivals fall in the autumn and spring — when you can expect sunshine, clear blue skies and a moderate climate, by far the most pleasant time to travel to Bhutan.
A Tshechu is far more than a performance. Illustrative of a motley wardrobe and whirling masked choreography, pursued by traditional dance, melody and poetry that portray deeply spiritual stories, it is an affluent array of Bhutan's devout customs — a colourful extravaganza of the finest clothes, foods and, most importantly, people of diverse backgrounds. Watching the sacred dances is believed to help one accumulate spiritual merit. These festivals aren't a source of mere entertainment, but a source of mental enlightenment.
With the local knowledge and expert guidance of Drukyul Delights, you gain more than just a view — you receive unparalleled access and deep insight into these ancient ceremonies, transforming your tour from a spectator event into an intimate cultural immersion.
The Festival Experience

Honouring Guru Rinpoche
"Day Ten" — A Sacred Festival
A Tshechu honours Guru Rinpoche, the saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. The name means "day ten," as many are held on the tenth day of a Bhutanese lunar month, in the courtyards of majestic dzongs and temples.
Sacred Cham Dances
Meditations in Motion
The centrepiece is the series of masked dances (Cham), performed by trained monks and laymen. Each twirl and gesture holds meaning — depicting the deeds of saints and deities, the triumph over evil, and the path to spiritual awakening.
The Sound of the Sacred
Cymbals, Drums & Long Horns
The dances move to the powerful sounds of cymbals, drums and the long horns (dungchen). The atmosphere is electric — you are surrounded by Bhutanese families, their faces full of devotion and joy.
The Finest Attire
Gho, Kira & Community Spirit
Tshechus are vital social gatherings. Families come together in their finest handwoven national dress — the Gho for men and the Kira for women — sharing food, stories and a deep sense of shared heritage.
Spiritual Merit
An Important Act of Faith
For the Bhutanese, attending a Tshechu accumulates spiritual merit and washes away sins. The dramatic portrayals of judgment after death serve as moral instruction, preparing observers for the afterlife.

Most Popular Festivals in Bhutan
The pleasant spring & autumn months offer clear skies and ideal weather
Spring · Paro
Paro Tshechu
One of Bhutan's most famous festivals, held in the stunning Paro valley. Its highlight is the dawn unfurling of the enormous Thongdrel — a sacred scroll painting of Guru Rinpoche — on the final day, believed to cleanse the viewer of sin.
Autumn · Thimphu
Thimphu Tshechu
Held in the nation's capital at Tashichho Dzong, this grand affair attracts people from all over the country, with days of continuous masked dances and folk performances — a vibrant display of Bhutanese culture and a major social event.
Spring · Punakha
Punakha Drubchen & Tshechu
A unique two-part event in the former capital. The Drubchen re-enacts a 17th-century battle against the Tibetan army — local militia (pazaps) recreate the scene with incredible energy — followed by the sacred dances in the courtyard of magnificent Punakha Dzong.
A Journey Transformed
A Guest's Story
I had seen photos of the Paro Tshechu, but I was not prepared for the reality. My guide from Drukyul Delights, Kinley, was my key to everything. On the last day, instead of just dropping me in the crowd, he woke me at 3 AM and arranged for us to sit with a local family he knew. We shared butter tea and snacks as we waited for the sun. When they unfurled the giant Thongdrel, Kinley quietly explained the meaning of each figure. I was not a tourist taking a picture — I was a guest, sharing a deeply spiritual moment. It was the highlight of my entire trip to Asia.
