Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 โ€“ Thimphu

Activities: Greeted at Paro International Airport, drive ~1 hr to Thimphu (2,320 m), pausing at the 15th-century Tamchog Monastery built by iron-bridge builder Thangthong Gyalpo. In Thimphu, visit the magnificent Tashichho Dzong โ€” seat of government and the Central Monastic Body โ€” and enjoy a traditional Bhutanese dinner. (54 km)

Day 2 โ€“ Thimphu culture

Activities: Explore the capital โ€” the Postal Museum (create personalized stamps), the National Memorial Chorten, the Buddha Dordenma viewpoint, 12th-century Changangkha Lhakhang, the Takin Preserve, Sangaygang viewpoint and the Dupthop nunnery. After lunch, hike to the tranquil Cheri Monastery, then free time in Thimphu town.

Day 3 โ€“ Punakha

Activities: Drive to Punakha (76 km, ~3 hrs) over the iconic Dochula Pass with its 108 stupas and Himalayan panorama. Visit the Royal Botanical Park (46 rhododendron species), Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility), and the majestic Punakha Dzong, crossing Bhutan's longest suspension bridge above the Pho and Mo rivers.

Day 4 โ€“ Phobjikha

Activities: Travel to the serene Phobjikha/Gangtey Valley (66 km, ~3 hrs), winter roost of the black-necked cranes. Visit Kuenzang Chholing Shedra and Gangtey Monastery, walk the Gangtey Nature Trail through pine and dwarf-bamboo forest, and learn at the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre.

Day 5 โ€“ Thimphu

Day 6 โ€“ Paro

Day 7 โ€“ Tiger's Nest

Day 8 โ€“ Trek begins

Trek: 17 km ยท 4โ€“5 hrs ยท Ascent 300 m ยท Camp 2,850 m.

Activities: Your trek begins at the ruins of Drugyel Dzong (2,300 m). A gentle path climbs through rice and millet fields, apple orchards and forest to Gunitsawa Village and an army post. Tonight's camp sits across the river at 2,850 m.

Day 9 โ€“ Thangthangkha

Trek: 22 km ยท 7โ€“8 hrs ยท Ascent 770 m ยท Camp 3,610 m.

Activities: A long but rewarding day through the picturesque river valley, with gentle ascents and descents to a meadow campsite where, weather permitting, you'll catch your first magnificent view of Mt. Jumolhari.

Accommodation: Camp, Thangthangkha.

Day 10 โ€“ Jangothang

Trek: 19 km ยท 5โ€“6 hrs ยท Ascent 480 m ยท Camp 4,080 m.

Activities: Trek up the widening Paro Chhu valley past Soe, Takethang and Dangochang, with yak herders' homes dotting the landscape, to Jangothang โ€” one of the Himalayas' most beautiful campsites โ€” for a spectacular close-up of Mt. Jumolhari.

Day 11 โ€“ Festival Day 1

Activities: Immerse yourself in the festival at the foot of Mt. Jumolhari, celebrated by the Soe and Lingzhi communities. The day opens with the program unfurling and Zhabten recitation for His Majesty, followed by spectacular mask dances (Chham), highlander folk dances and songs, and a lively visitor-vs-locals tug-of-war. Browse stalls of yak-wool handicrafts and discover Bhutan's Snow Leopard conservation efforts.

Day 12 โ€“ Festival Day 2

Activities: More local games and traditional contests โ€” archery, stone throwing and more. For the adventurous, optional day hikes to the base of Mt. Jumolhari or Jichu Drakey, or to the surreal turquoise Tsophu Twin Lakes. A final starry night at Jangothang.

Day 13 โ€“ Return trek

Activities: Bid farewell to Jangothang and retrace your steps to Thangthangkha. The more gradual descent gives time to absorb panoramic views you may have missed on the way up โ€” yaks grazing, alpine meadows and crisp mountain air.

Day 14 โ€“ Trek ends

Activities: The final descent through Gunitsawa Village brings you back to Shana, where your vehicle awaits for the drive to Paro. Enjoy a hot shower, a well-earned rest, an optional traditional hot-stone bath, and a celebratory dinner.

Day 15 โ€“ Departure

The festival is scheduled for October 14th and 15th, 2026, at Jangothang.

To foster harmonious coexistence between the highlanders and the endangered Snow Leopard, raise environmental awareness, revive native highland songs and dances, and generate income for local people through nomadic souvenirs and edible items.

Mask dances (Chham), highlander folk songs and dances, local games (tug-of-war, archery, khuru/darts, shot put, horse and yak riding), stalls of handicrafts and delicacies, and Snow Leopard conservation presentations.

The trek to Jangothang takes 3 days from the ruins of Drugyel Dzong in Paro (Days 8โ€“10), with two festival days at Jangothang and a 2-day return trek.

It's moderately challenging โ€” several days walking 5โ€“8 hours at altitude with significant ascents and descents. A good fitness level and prior trekking experience are recommended; it is generally not suitable for young children or elderly travellers. Acclimatization is built into the itinerary.

Jangothang, the Jumolhari trek base camp within Jigme Dorji National Park, sits at approximately 4,080 m (13,385 ft).

Luxury tents at designated campsites with quality equipment, run by our experienced trekking crew. Optional 3/4/5โ˜… hotels are provided in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Phobjikha before and after the trek.

Your crew prepares nutritious Bhutanese and international meals at camp, with boiled and filtered drinking water. At the festival, stalls also sell local snacks and beverages.

Connectivity is very limited or non-existent once you leave Shana. Hotels in Thimphu, Paro and Punakha offer Wi-Fi.
